In truth, Linus Torvalds was quite simply unwilling to name his new operating system Linux - he concluded that it was arrogant. Needless to say, what’s made Twitter a revolution is its ease of use.  From signup to search, from following others to getting followed by others, to tweet or to retweet, to use the web or the phone, Twitter is just plain simple.  Add to this the power of Twitter APIs, there are hundreds of tools, utilities and apps that continue to spring from nowhere.  Today, there is a twitter tool just about to do anything you want on twitter.

Some use twitter for chit-chat.  Ranging from “I just got up, and am off to a shower” to “Please get out and vote for me”, much is being said in 140 characters or less.  Folks are asking questions and people in hundreds respond.  Advertisers market their products, Affilaites promote products, News sources announce breaking news and Bloggers post their blogs as tweets - whether for personal or for business, Twitter is seen everywhere and used by everyone.

It has never been easier to build a network of followers.  Never before has it been so easy to build a network of a 1,000 followers who follow what you have to say and are ready to receive a message from you.  And best of all, it costs nothing to do it!  Just think about what you would have to do to get a following of a 1,000 people - whether it is cold calling, or mail advertisement, or opt-in email marketing or a paid squeeze page lead capture - it takes a lot of time, money and effort.

The benefits being obvious, everyone is looking to build a wide follower base.  There is a widely prevalent phenomenon on Twitter that is increasing in popularity - “Follow Me and I will Follow You Back“.  This simply means that if you follow me on twitter, I will follow you right back.  There are two schools of thought on this.

The first school of thought is that it is not appropriate to follow everyone that follows you.  The second school of thought obviously thinks not.  The idea of not following everyone that follow you has some logic to it.  You could think of some parallels to this - “Buy my product, I will buy your product back” or “Subscribe to my newsletter, I will subscribe to your newsletter back”.  One could also argue that if you follow 1,000’s of people, you really can’t do justice, as multiple tweets from each one (assuming each one is active) would just be information overload and you simply can’t follow any tweet, giving it justice.  Both of these arguments could be argued as having some merit.  But, also not.

Think for a moment why people use Twitter.  True, one of the primary objectives is for you say what you are doing now and for others to tune in (or “follow”), but Twitter can be used for reasons well beyond that.  Twitter is a wonderful networking tool, where you can build relationships with others and communicate not just now, but for months and years to come.  You can sure tweet for the moment, but you can just as well message the other person in private.  And if it is true that Twitter is a social networking tool, and if others have something of value to offer to you in return, there is nothing unusual about you tuning into their message as well.  After all, you only stand to benefit!

The school of thought that says “Follow Me and I will Follow You Back” does has merit.  Just because two parties follow each other, there is no commitment or obligation.  Either party can ignore tweets, or can search through tweets by name, by RSS feeds or utilizing one of the infinite tools available, if the ongoing tweets are missed.  Either party can message each other, and either party can choose to review or ignore such messages.  And if one does not wants to be bothered, that could be done as well.  Worst case, one could unfollow and/or block others as well. Just as anything else in life, if you use the tool effectively, you will only stand to benefit.

Twitter is real.  Twitter works.  Twitter is the tool of the century - probably bigger and better than any other Social Networking or Web 2.0 tool.  Embrace it!

And if “Follow” bothers you, because you simply can’t follow 1,000’s of people (which I agree with and in that context, Twitter allowing one to follow 2,000 people may not make sense either, unless most are not active, in which case they should not be on Twitter in the first place!), then follow others on Twitter (and be followed) so you can use it to “Send and Receive Messages“.   Again, there is no better tool, whether online or offline, that allows you to be able to send and receive messages to such a wide audience that has mutually agreed to receive and send messages to each other.

If you agree with this thought process, maybe we should rephrase the theme to “Receive Me and I will Receive You Back“.    And, maybe we are not just talking Twitter, but rather an enhanced Twitter, one that is naturally Two-way, maybe we are talking Twowitter

How To Solve The Problem Of Wet Packs in Steam Autoclaves and Sterilizers.

As a manufacturer of steam autoclaves, we at Medi-Clave frequently hear feedback from current and prospective customers alike, regarding condensate issues (wet loads) in their chamber, post-sterilization, impeding satisfactory processing results. In fact, it could very well be the single leading technical issue we have run into over the past 15+ years of manufacturing sterilizers! To understand why, you really have to understand the myriad of potential causes, to appreciate the complexity of solving this simple problem.

When helping our clients identify the source of the issue, we begin by evaluation of the most common suspects first. Foremost among those suspects is the steam supply. Frequently we find that steam quality is the culprit in leading to excessive condensate formation within the autoclave. Our first recommendation to clients is to determine if you are placing excessive demand on the boiler. Next, examine the steam circuit/supply and look for potential areas of condensate formation such as dead legs or improperly trapped or insulated piping. The duty of a steam trap is to discharge condensate while not allowing the escape of live steam. The further away the steam line is from the heating source/medium, the more likely condensate is to form, and require removal from the system. One should consider proper insulation for piping,the further away the steam line is, the more the need for insulation. Lastly, have your sterilizer service people check the jacket steam trap and check valve at the drain port to be sure they are clear and functioning properly.

If you or your staff have no experience with proper steam supply design/piping, we would recommend that you contact Autoclave experts or Steam Sterilizer expertsfor an evaluation.

If the water content of the steam is 5% by mass, then the steam is said to be 95% dry and has a dryness fraction of 0.95.satisfactory dryness fraction is .97) Once you have established that the steam supply is not the source (of excess condensate), it is time to look more closely at what is being loaded into the vessel, the design of the sterilizer itself and perhaps the operation of the autoclave.

Another common cause of wet loads is the load itself. However tempting it may be to pack the chamber full of product, in order to keep up with demand, (dense packing) is frequently a cause of excessive condensation which cannot then be completely flashed off by subsequent steam injections. Large quantities of hard goods or even complex packaging can make proper steam circulation a challenge.  

Steam enters the chamber and contacts the product, it is essential that the steam collapse (condense) on the product in-order for the heat to be released to the load. But ultimately the water formation must be discharged through condensate management or re- vaporized in order to prevent contamination of the product. Removal of the excess water is crucial to prevention of insulating the load from the steam. That said, too much steam, at too fast a rate can result in excessive water formation which might overwhelm or swamp steam traps. Be sure that your steam traps are properly sized.

To dry the load after the fact, many users are tempted to employ excessively long deep vacuums at the end of the cycle. Because the chamber is heated (via the jacket) and the fact that water will flash off into steam at a lower temperature under vacuum, this is relatively successful. But what ultimately results is an unnecessarily long cycle time, and potentially a non-sterile load as water can collect in areas, and insulate the intended product from achieving temperature. Deep long post-sterilization vacuum drying phases are like closing the barn door after the horses have escaped.

When we are asked to assist under these conditions, we typically look to prevent (or greatly reduce) the formation of condensate by making sure that the load itself is brought up to a certain temperature prior to the introduction of steam. One simple way this can be accomplished is by defining a proper pre conditioning phase at the beginning of the cycle.

In Summary: Check the quality of your Facility Steam, including possible excessive demands on your boiler.
Check piping insulation from your steam source, to the autoclave. Check the way you pack your loads and do not over pack the chamber! Check the size and operation of the steam-traps and the drain globe valves leaking through. Check for clogged drains pipes and drain ports. Check your vacuum drying phase program settings and operation. Check or add a controlled pre-conditioning phase at the beginning of the cycle.

As an alternative you might wish to consider simply increasing the jacket temperature set-point, as long as it does not interfere with maintaining the temperature uniformity within the chamber during the sterilize dwell phase. A word of caution, merely increasing the jacket temperature could result in the super-heating of the steam, in the case that your condensate issue is not particularly bad, so use this strategy cautiously.

There are some unique approaches that can be causes, or solutions, to the condensate formation issue.

These include: Charge Rate Control (CRC). Many autoclaves are not equipped with a proportional control valve, or the necessary control system capability, to control the ramp up or charge rate of steam injection during the cycle. If a chamber does not have some means of valve configuration, or software limitations to control the rate that steam is added to the chamber, the result could be a flooding of the chamber with steam that results in instant condensate formation (this is a common problem found in South African Hospitals and can be effectively rectified  by adapting to the right approach) . If the steam injection were to be ramped up more slowly, the amount of steam and subsequent condensate can be more easily controlled.

There are many causes for condensate formation, in fact, condensing of steam is essential in heat transfer and hence sterilization, but too much condensate is detrimental. If you are experiencing such problems, try some of the above in identifying the cause, or contact Medi-Clave for assistance.

I’m finding that it is possible to download some great software tools to help improve my efficiency at work and at home. Some are free and some aren’t. In particular I am thinking about the importance of antivirus software for my computer.

I’ve had the occasional virus over the years, and it can totally ruin hundreds of files and cause very significant losses. Even the more benign viruses can slow you down. So I’ve determined to make sure I always have updated antivirus protection on all my computers.

The thing is, there are a number of good free programs you can download to obtain solid virus protection. I’ve come to learn that the free software does the trick, but I need to also install additional software to protect against trojan horses and adware.

Although usually not as dangerous as a true virus attack, your computer can get really slow if there are thousands of cookies and other gremlins interfering with its operation. The free antivirus software will likely not protect as well against all the internet marauders; so it might be best (and fastest) to buy a modestly priced package like Avast! or Norton.

Finally, as the business world leans towards a paperless environment, there is the need to be able to consolidate and organize all types of files from hundreds of software applications. We’ll likely find more and more the need to convert spreadsheets, text files and photographs to pdf format.

Of course, Adobe is the Big Dog in this field, with a number of other players as well. Adobe Acrobat is probably the best-known software package and there are a few choices of exactly which product in that family you choose. If your needs are very basic, you might be able to get away with the free Adobe Reader. That is pretty limiting though, and I’ve found that I need something that will let me work with the files rather than just read, save, send and print them.

Whichever file management software you select, you’ll find that there are significant time savings in being able to quickly work with pdf files. I suspect this is only going to become more prevalent in the future.
