Green Car Tips

Green is the new watchword for a generation, everyone is looking for products that will help save the planet and that includes green cars. If you are concerned with the environment or would just like an alternative to high prices at the pumps there are several things you can do.

1. Hybrids- The easiest way to have a green car is to buy one! These vehicles are generally combination vehicles that will run on gas, electricity or other alternative fuel. The main thing you want to concern yourself with here is whether or not your area supports the alternative fuel.

2. Driving Habits- One way you can help the planet is to change your driving habits to the point that your automobile is a “green” car. There are things anyone can do to decrease fuel consumption and thereby reduce emissions. Driving erratically with hard stops and fast take offs will burn a third more gasoline than moderate or calm driving.

3. Diesel- More and more people are achieving green car status by converting to bio-diesel. All across the country this fuel is becoming more available and if you already own a diesel vehicle there is little if anything you will have to modify to use this clean burning fuel. The worst emissions you will have is the smell of french fries!

4. Maintenance- Keeping your car properly tuned will help more than you can imagine. Old oil, bad plugs or wires and dirty air filters all conspire to decrease your fuel economy. Would you believe that something as simple as proper tire inflation can affect the amount of gasoline you burn? It is estimated that this country would save two billion gallons of gas per year if everyone properly inflated their tires, talk about a green car!

There are many ways to reduce fuel consumption, boost economy and overall help the planet. Whether you buy a new green car or simply change a few things with your old one, there is something everyone can do to help.

Maximize Your Profit on Real Estate in Soft Areas

When buying a property for real estate investing you will need to be smarter about it. You do not want to have to limit yourself to purchasing homes you have resources for. Many real estate markets now have many properties with little or no equity. You will not be able to sell much higher than what the market brings. This is why you need to buy at a substantial discount to make a acceptable profit if you are doing this the traditional way. Now your improved house compliments the neighborhood and is ready to be put back on the market. . This is where other options in the real estate arena come into use.

Creative investors will begin by looking into prices in the different locations. Then, they search through house listings with the words must sell, needs work or vacant. It is partly because of this that some people who are flipping houses are doing so well. Afterwards, you have to weigh your profits against the risk spent acquiring the house successfully flipped. This is why no money downs strategies like subject to are recommended.

Knitting, spinning, dying wool

One of the oldest materials for clothes is wool. Very shortly after our ancestors, the cave men, learned that you can carry half a dead furry animal or tons of fur to keep warm, they discovered spinning wool. And what a congenial material wool is! It has a lot of characteristics that synthetic fibres do not reach - astonishing.

If you are a wool aficionado and are fond of wool, you most probably will want to work with it. The first thing that comes to ones mind is spinning wool. I found a nice informative page about that on a german blog: Schafwolle spinnen

Next thing is of course dyeing wool yourself. This is something many people don’t dare…although it is pretty easy and can be done in any household with plant and a few chemicals. Have a look over here (sorry, the video is only in german):Strickbücher

Last but not least you will want to knit with your wool, and let’s be honest, although it can be really fun to do all the things like spinning and dyeing yourself, most of the time you will just buy a good ball of wool in a shop.

Read here about knitting on this german blog: Strickanleitung für Laces

The wool shown on that page has proved to go nicely when knitting and is easy to wash. Now get your knitting needles or your spinning wheel and have some fun with wool!

Choosing A Cheap Hair Straightener

When people hear the word cheap, it connotes a thing that is inexpensive and is normally substandard, though it may not always mean this way. Usually it just refers to products which are of lower costs.

Cheap hair straighteners are everywhere. Those that normally come from China are made of aluminum that may cause hair damage when used for a long period of time. Most of these also lack the capacity to curl the hair, unlike other hair straighteners that have dual purpose. When you don’t really need styling and you rarely use a hair flattening iron, then it may be practical to buy these products. But if you’re someone who needs a daily hair straightening solution, then opt for those which may really last for a long time.

Some famous inexpensive brands in the United States are Andis, Conair, Revlon, and Remington among a few others. These hair straighteners may not be considered cheap at all, because they are made of ceramic and tourmaline that makes the hair lock its moisture while taming the frizzy hair strands. Investing your money on these products may be worth it since they can be used for a longer time period. In addition, hair damage is unlikely, considering that they are made of ceramic material. You can style your hair by curling or straightening it up. It’s your choice.

In choosing hair straighteners, consider not just the price but the true value of the product. Is it durable enough even though it is inexpensive? If consumer reviews say it breaks easily or it stops working after a few months, then you’d have to buy hair straighteners over and over again. You might even spend more for these than when you purchase a single reliable product that is a bit pricey, but will make the most out of your money’s worth.

Consider These Suggestions For Summer Travel

I’ve been thinking about where I could go with a lot of vacation attractions, but will be sensitive to my tight budget. Southern California would be a good possibility for your summer travel planning. There you will find theme parks, beaches, great weather and a lot more.

Another possibility would be Hawaii. You can almost feel that warm ocean water right now, but remember that there are offsetting advantages to the Golden State. The Southern California Vacation Guru has written about the differences between vacations in Southern California and Hawaii. The beaches in SoCal do not have as many rock outcroppings and the sun is less intense (as is the humidity). The water temperature is higher in the Aloha state, but in the middle of summer, the cooler water can be more refreshing.

Hawaii does have an advantage with such beautiful natural countryside and vegetation, enhanced by the local Polynesian culture. However, the California coastline, mountains and desert are quite beautiful as well, and the place is a melting pot of cultural diversity.

The beaches are just one of many attractions to be enjoyed in Southern California. You could spend a week checking out the seven top-notch theme parks between San Diego and Los Angeles County. In particular, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott’s Berry Farm top the list for thrill rides, with the Six Flags roller coasters being in especially great abundance and variety. Those parks both boast many coasters and similar adrenaline-pumping rides. In fact, they offer more thrill rides than Disneyland, although the Magic Kingdom does include some fast attractions such as the Matterhorn and Space Mountain.

Hawaii does not offer roller coasters, but does offer surfing on the North Shore of Oahu in the wintertime. It may be that California offers more ways to trim the budget, but sometimes there are great Hawaii vacation packages to be found on the internet or in the newspaper Travel section.

Important Information for Home Workers

An Introduction to Home Working

Ask anyone to choose their perfect job and home working would come high on their wish list. Whether home working is an option provided by your employer or a decision you have taken yourself in starting your own business, the thought of just getting out of bed, walk over to a workstation and just start work is very appealing. No commuting to and from the office and working hours to suit yourself.

But is home or flexible working right for you as an individual, or good for your business as an employer? Well there are many advantages and disadvantages. Home or flexible working brings new responsibilities for both the employer and employee. Equally with advances in mobile technology it has never been easier to set up your own business to work from home.

An Increasing Trend

From a business point of view, allowing staff to work at home on either a full or part-time basis can bring a range of business benefits, from increased productivity, greater staff motivation to effective use of your premises. Advancements in mobile technology has contributed enormously to the increase in opportunities for working from home.

The spread of home working using the internet or telephone opens up a new range of possibilities with regards to the way a business works and structures itself. Computers, mobile phones, broadband and mobile broadband all play a role. For the individual, becoming self employed and working from home has also never been easier. If you have a laptop and mobile phone the opportunity is there, it’s just deciding what you want to do. So home working is becoming a way of life for many individuals and businesses, but what is home working?

Some employers will offer selected employees the opportunity to become a teleworker, whereby an employee can undertake their role from home utilising various types of technology, which is installed at the employees home by the employer. The employee will remain in touch with the business and other teleworkers. Some businesses, for example the utility companies who require gas, electric and meter readers, will class employees undertaking this type of work as teleworkers or outworkers.

Some individuals opt for the self-employed work life. The self-employed will operate their business from home, offering a product or service such as web development or business consultancy from home. In these types of roles, the individual can often plan their day to suit their own needs. I know one web developer who often works well into the early hours of the morning as this is when he feels most productive.

Others such as a painter and decorator, plumber or gardener, whilst providing their services away from the home, use home as the office for paperwork such as pricing future jobs and preparing invoices. I know of several painters and decorators who work Monday to Thursday, but use Friday’s to go out and price up future potential work. That is one thing to bear in mind when setting up as self employed, you need to allow time to find or prospect for future work.

Some types of work are more suitable for home working than others, the following list is not exhaustive, but will give some guidance:

  • Telesales and Marketing
  • Customer Services
  • Professional services & consultancy i.e. HR Administration & Accountancy
  • Certain types of administration work
  • Data input
  • Creative/Graphics
  • Writing, editing, translation and research.
  • I.T. Support & Programming

Many of the above have a common theme and that is that as long as you have access to a computer and a phone, you can undertake almost all of these tasks from home.

The shift towards home working does not mean employees only work from home. Splitting time between the workplace and home is the most productive solution, as you want employees to attend meetings, therefore keeping them informed and involved. Continued face to face interaction within the business remains a key requirement.

With the introduction of flexible working regulations, employers now have to seriously consider employee requests to work flexibly from home, especially if they have parental responsibility for children under 16 years old, disabled children or they are carers for other adults with disabilities.

Employers and individuals also need to consider what equipment will be required to ensure that an efficient business operation and working environment is set up.

Many accessories can complement office furniture to suit the home or office environment.

The Pros and Cons

So what are the advantages and disadvantages of an employer allowing employees to work from home or use their home as a base for at least part of the working week? It’s clear there are a number of benefits to the employer:

  • Staff Retention is increased
  • Wider pool of applicants to recruit from e.g. disabled people who prefer to work from home.
  • Productivity gains through having fewer interruptions and less commuting time.
  • Reduced stress and sickness increasing staff motivation.
  • Savings on office space and facilities.
  • Sales staff closer to clients, rather than being based at the office which could be miles away.
  • As with life if there are advantages then there are also disadvantages to home/flexible working:
  • Management of staff and monitoring performance
  • Possible deterioration of key skills and quality of work.
  • Capital costs - training and providing suitable equipment, this could include adaptations to meet Health & Safety standards or meet the needs of disabled workers.
  • Difficulties maintaining staff development and upgrading of skills.
  • Information security risks
  • Increased telecommunication and I.T. costs
  • Sense of isolation and communication problems amongst home workers.
  • Staff morale and difficulties in maintaining team spirit.
  • Home working may not be suitable for certain types of jobs.

One thing I particularly miss is the Monday morning office banter about what you did at the weekend of how your football team has fared compared to others. Often the camaraderie that is unique to an office where you get to know people well over many years is also lost where flexible working becomes an option.

Are You Suited o Working at Home?

Having identified the types of work that is suitable for flexible working, the employer must satisfy themselves that employees are suited to this type of work. It’s likely they will need a number of skills in key areas to allow them to work away from base.

  • Time management and self discipline
  • Motivation
  • Communication
  • Technology

We must make it clear that flexible working is not suitable for everyone and care should be taken, because allowing one person to work from home will set a precedent that others will want to follow. Others will see an attraction to working at home particularly on a lovely summer’s day, rather than being stuck in an office. I must confess that as I write this article, I am sitting in our summer house at the bottom of the garden with the laptop on a glorious summer’s day in June.

An employer you must have a clear idea of how home/flexible working could fit in with the needs of the business. A set of house rules need to be established and maintained, i.e. priority is given to requests from parents of young or disabled children. My wife for example, plans her day around the hours of taking the children to school and collecting them later. She maintains that she is extremely focused on what she needs to achieve within those six hours in between. No distractions or idle chit-chat that will occur in an office environment.

In some cases the employer is legally obliged to seriously consider requests for home/flexible workers. Employee with parental responsibility for children aged 16 or under, or disabled children who are under 18 and receive disability living allowances can request a range of flexible working patterns from their employers, this includes the right to work from home. There are similar rights for employees who are carers of adults.

The introduction of flexible working can also lead to an changes to employee contract terms and conditions. In a majority of cases an employee’s place of work is listed in the written schedules of their employment contract. It’s important that when an employee starts to work from home it may be necessary to review and amend their employment contract.

The following is a list of contractual aspects an employer should consider when implementing a home/flexible work policy:

  • Stated hours of work
  • Identify core times when employees undertake to work and/or are contactable.
  • Extra duties or responsibilities that may need to be assigned in addition to those already agreed
  • Identify the terms regarding the supply and insurance of any equipment that may be required, these should clearly state ownership and use, especially that its not to be used for personal use.
  • Clearly identify what the employer will reimburse to cover additional expenses the employee may incur, its especially important to identify the calculation method when costs are shared i.e. utility bills and telecommunications
  • Procedures to be put in place if either the employee or employer wishes to terminate the home/flexible working arrangement.

Allowing flexible working the employer should remember that they still have health and safety responsibilities for people who work at or from home; and you are likely to have to provide and maintain equipment for employees to use, these include:

  • Workstation complete with suitable task chair
  • Filing cabinet, shelves or storage
  • PC/Laptop with office software, email and broadband internet connection
  • Dedicated business telephone line
  • Printer & fax machine
  • Stationery and Office Supplies

For added luxury, executive leather desk chairs are available for the home or office working environment.

IT equipment and software can be expensive so it’s important to ensure it meets your genuine business need and is compatible with your existing systems. Technology changes almost daily and with today’s advances the establishment of virtual teams where employees work together despite working at home can be set up easily and at reasonable expense. These teams could be two employees talking over the phone or you could use more hi-tech solutions like high speed internet, instant messaging, webinar and video conferencing. Many laptops now have web cam and this also offers the chance to see the person you are speaking with.

Providing all this kit and equipment it is important to ensure your business insurance cover is extended to cover home workers, as their home insurance is unlikely to cover this, however they should check with their insurer and extend their policy to include working from home.

Workers who adopt home working should check with their local council and mortgage company the position regarding using their home as a work base, and whether they may have to pay business rates for the portion of their home they use as an office. Some self employed businesses will involve use of a vehicle which will need to be parked up at certain times of the day. For example painters and decorators and builders are likely to utilise a transit van or pick up truck in the work. You should therefore ensure that neighbours will not be offended by having the vehicle parked in the street or to block light out of their homes. If you are to park a vehicle at home, let the neighbours know, it may save a lot of hassle later.

The employer needs to ensure that employees take care of business equipment and information in their possession, it’s important to establish procedures to be followed if any item is damaged or lost, especially data and intellectual rights.

We all agree that home working offers a wide range of benefits to both the business and employees, but it needs to be carefully managed to be successful. Procedures should be put in place for managers to monitor and assess home workers, this is the most significant managerial challenge an employer will face. It can be helpful to measure their effectiveness in terms of output rather than the hours of work. Agree set goals and deadlines for particular projects, and ensure these are being met, give feedback promptly and sensitively if things go wrong.

Ensuring home workers have access to training can prepare and help employees develop the necessary skills they need. For staff who work alone a sense of isolation is one of the main factors most likely to make home working fail, therefore it’s important to ensure procedures are put into place to make people feel part of the team, these should include:

  • Frequent 2-way feedback sessions about work and work related issues
  • Regular visits to the workplace
  • Inclusion in social activities for home based workers.
  • Clear procedures to be followed and contact lists for when things go wrong.

When the employees job is entirely home-based from the start, make sure their induction is undertaken at your premises, this helps the home worker focus and be productive if they have a chance to establish a clear idea of the people they will be working for.

Even for the small office in the workplace or at home office fit out contractors will advise on efficient use of lighting, space and the correct furniture.

A Brief Health & Safety Obligations Check List for Home Workers

If you use your home as your main business workplace, you must carry out a health and safety risk assessment to identify any possible hazards to yourself, workers, visitors and other members of your household.

Possible hazards include:

  • Using work equipment at home, including electrical appliances
  • Your workstation set-up
  • Handling loads
  • Hazardous substances and materials
  • Psychological hazards, such as stress or loneliness
  • Fire
  • Slips, trips and falls
  • Excessive noise or vibration

Slips, trips and falls are one of the most common causes of injury in the work place. Even something we take for granted on a daily basis, such as walking up and down the stairs, should be regarded as a risk to safety. Evaluate whether a hazard is significant and if it is, whether you have taken enough precautions to make the risk as low as you reasonably can.

You need to consider:

  • Your home and those who live there - including vulnerable persons, e.g. children, the elderly, and new and expectant mothers
  • The work done in your home
  • The equipment in your home
  • Emergency procedures
  • First aid provision

Five steps to a health and safety risk assessment

  1. Identify any hazards.
  2. Decide who might be harmed and how.
  3. Assess the risks and remove them or, otherwise, reduce them as far as is reasonably possible.
  4. Record your findings.
  5. Check the risks regularly and take further steps if needed.

Conclusion

With advancements in mobile technology, working at home has become far easier to do. It can offer a very balanced way of life and the rewards can be great. In the current economic climate, many who have been unfortunate to suffer redundancy or reduced hours are considering setting up their own business to work at home. Having worked in the corporate world for over twenty years and just suffered redundancy, it is certainly something to consider.

But working from home needs to be considered carefully. Is it right for you? Is it right for your employer? What impact will it have on your homelife? Many advantages, but also many disadvantages and bear in mind the health and safety requirements and risks. Your health is important so choosing the correct office furniture to meet your needs is a must for any home worker to ensure you have the proper facilities for home working.

For years a friend of mine worked from home with his desk in his living room and eventually he realised that he could never get away from work, which is as important as doing the work in the first place because we all need time away from work.

If you are lucky enough to really love your work the temptation can be to do it all day long. Eventually this can lead to burn out and can also take away some of the pleasure of working, even if it is something you really love. Therefore it is important to have balance in your life, even more so when you work from home. Some suggestions to help to achieve this are to make sure that when you have lunch, for example, remove yourself from the work space and don’t eat at your desk, get some separation from the work when you are not doing it.

Remember that just because you work from home it doesn’t mean that work has to take over your life.

I want my Wii!

So today was a pretty busy day. At work we had to fix a bunch of different issues with our servers and our workstations. Boy, was that tough! We got through it though and our client issues are coming down ever so slowly. This is good though because that means management isn’t breathing down our necks as much as they used to. This gives me a lot more free time to get the other work I have to get done.

When I got home today I wasn’t feeling very well. Must be swine flu. I decided I didn’t want to eat anything. I sat on the couch and watched some sports for the majority of the night. Boy, the Phillies are real good. They might make a good run at the World Series this year. They first need to beat the Dodgers. I don’t know if the Dodgers are deep enough to make it. They just seem to be running around without knowing what’s going on. The Philles have such a deep line up and strong starting pitching. The Yankees are in the same boat as the Dodgers, good hitting but questionable pitching. I bet the Angels beat the Yankees and Phillies beat the Dodgers. It’d be something if there were a Angels/Dodgers World series, but that’s highly unlikely in my opinion.

Does anyone have a Wii for Sale? I really would like to get a Nintendo Wii for my girlfriend this holiday season. I think she’d have a lot of fun with it. She needs some fun.

This site has a wii for sale with free shipping. I think I may go ahead and get that.

Cheap DVD Players That Will Protect Your Collection for Years

DVD players to amaze your friends! This is sometimes how you go about purchasing your player. But don’t you want quality playback? The most inexpensive DVD players are sometimes the best, even though the top name brands advertise more thus their names are more familiar. But that is only the company putting the name in front of you. That doesn’t mean that they are necessarily better than the names you haven’t heard of before. The most important thing is the quality of the music or the sound from the movie or video.

When looking for a DVD video, there are a wide choice of places to look, both online and off. But when you are adding to your collection, you want a company you can trust and who makes buying easy and fast. Purchase some music or a movie from an online store and note the response time. If they ship quickly and are responsive to your needs, stick with them! They want to keep your business, and they will usually go the extra mile to fulfill your needs. Online stores who offer DVDs as well as equipment and accessories are often good bets to take good care of you.

Shopping for DVD Player needs doesn’t have to be a hassle. In fact, the easier it is, the better. Then you can build your collection fast. Perhaps you love jazz and are completing a huge collection you are proud of. Or maybe you are putting together a full set of every 60s hit you can locate. If you are the movie buff, you might be collecting a sampling of all the movies of George Clooney, or all the pictures directed by your favorite director. You can collect them by genre, such as anime, adventure or comedy, or you can collect them by decade.

No matter what your favorite DVDs are, music, movies or video, you must get that collection complete and play it on some good equipment. So Buy DVD players to amaze your friends and family? Maybe. But it’s better if you carefully choose a player that will amaze YOU! You need something that will give high-quality performance, and from a company that also gives great customer service. Then you can enjoy your music or movie collection with no distractions.

How Big of a Deal is Google Wave? Very.

You may be noticing the buzz about Google Wave and wondering if it is just a bunch of hype over the latest shiny object on the web. Google aficionados seem to think this is a game changer… a disruptive technology that will fundamentally alter the way people communicate. But are they just enthralled by the Google mystique and overly impressed by a slick demo of some clever technology?

Well, you can put me in the camp with those who believe that this is a technological milestone with significance comparable to radio, television, computers, and the Internet itself. Like all of those key developments, Google Wave is not so much an invention as a synthesis of many components into a unified technology that is much greater than the sum of its parts.

I can hear some saying, “oh, brother. This wave site is just a next generation email application. Not that big a deal.” Even if Google Wave were just an “email on steroids” proposition, that would still be pretty huge given there have only been incremental advances in email over the last 40 years. But Wave is much, much more than that.

By starting from scratch with a fresh look at the concept of “communication” and with all the Web 2.0 technology available today, Google has developed a platform that will dramatically streamline the communication process while it enables and facilitates the creation of still greater technologies. Just as computer operating systems spawned entire industries driven by application developers, the Google Wave Platform/Program/Protocol will spawn untold new businesses and industries.

Case in point: WaveCenter. We envisioned WaveCenter long ago as a social network where people could easily collaborate on projects in very flexible but structured ways. Whether it’s writers collaborating on stories, scientists doing research, or entrepreneurs building their businesses, WaveCenter will provide applications custom made to help people work together in very specific ways. Before Google Wave, that vision was simply too ambitious. Soon it will be reality.

Through its concept of federated open source servers and extensible architecture, Google Wave will quickly become the platform onto which all other social networks, communication applications, and web services will be compelled to dock - not through coercion but because it will be the conduit through which data flows smoothly and easily. From the end-users’ perspective the value of every application they use will be enhanced through it’s connection to Wave. An application not integrated with Google Wave will be isolated, like CompuServe in the early days of the Internet.

Google has a history of building better mousetraps - from the original search engine to AdWords to AdSense to Google Apps, etc… but Google Wave may just be their greatest contribution to humanity yet.
